The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is the world’s leading professional organization representing physicians who treat people with cancer. ASCO’s members set the standard for patient care worldwide and lead the way in carrying out clinical research aimed at improving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.

ASCO assists their members in improving cancer care and prevention by providing online continuing medical education (CME) to physicians. ASCO needed a solution that would enable their nearly 30,000 members to easily purchase and complete either Self Evaluation Program (SEP) or Maintenance of Certification (MOC) offerings online. Traditionally, MOC courses have been offered in classrooms associated with their annual meetings or special workshops. Time and budgets have become a real issue by physicians needing to travel to a location for the courses, taking them away from their practice. To address this issue, ASCO embarked on a program to develop and offer MOC and SEP courses online.

ASCO was looking for an eLearning portal that would integrate with their existing member database to provide a simple, single sign-on for their members. The solution also required the ability to integrate with ABIM, a third-party online certification system, so members could take the exam through the portal, as well as track and receive certification.

THE SOLUTION

Digitec’s Knowledge Direct® Medical Learning Management System (LMS) proved to be the perfect eLearning solution for ASCO. The portal was designed as an integrated one-stop e-Learning solution. The robust assessment engine also enables ASCO to provide Quality of Care (QOC) products, using the extensible test bank, which directly links test items to learner resources.

Physicians are able to login and assess their current mastery through practice exams. Pre-tests are later compared to the final assessment to reflect the learners’ true achievement. Upon completion of a course, the learner gains immediate access to their transcript - which reports on their learning history.

Administrators can easily create and distribute new courses. Once created, courses are automatically added to the course catalog listing available on ASCO’s website. The eLearning platform offers an effective way for ASCO to assist their members in continually developing their knowledge and skills.
