The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) represents physicians, scientists and other healthcare professionals who specialize in infectious diseases. IDSA’s purpose is to improve the health of individuals, communities, and society by promoting excellence in patient care, education, research, public health, and prevention relating to infectious diseases. IDSA is committed to advancing the education of its physicians and members. It especially wants to assist them in their Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements.

IDSA needed a system to help their physicians recertify themselves for their specialties. Traditionally, Maintenance of Certification (MOC) courses are offered in classrooms associated with their annual meetings or special workshops. Time and budgets have become an issue by physicians needing to travel to a location for the courses which takes them away from their practice. To address this issue, IDSA embarked on a program to develop and offer MOC courses online.

The goal was to have a single system that could host a diverse set of learning products to eliminate overlapping or one-off solutions. IDSA needed a platform that will be an integrated one-stop eLearning solution which offers members an easy-to-use and consistent interface. The online learning system also needed to have a robust and flexible assessment system that meets requirements from mandated accreditation authorities.

THE SOLUTION

Digitec’s solution was to create an ABIM accepted testing engine designed to seamlessly report MOC course completion. The Learning Management System (LMS) also separately tracks Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits earned through completing a MOC course. The Knowledge Direct® suite of software was tailored to meet IDSA’s specific requirements including: incorporating a web page creation tool which allows administrators to enrich course content and assessment questions with embedded images, course specific auto-generated completion surveys, a tightly integrated eCommerce shopping cart, accessibility for proof readers to review course content and the ability to promote courses at seminars through the distribution of free access codes to non-members.

THE RESULT

By utilizing Digitec’s Knowledge Direct® Med, IDSA is able to:

• Securely transmit course data to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

• Extend its marketing initiatives through the “recommended courses” announcement directed at its members.

• Promote MOC accepted courses to its more than 8,600 members.

• Invoice, track and deliver courses sold through their eCommerce shopping cart.

• Distribute post-course surveys for content feedback from students at the topic and course level.
